Getting a Puppy for Christmas

Receiving a puppy for Christmas is a dream for many children. Roughly 62 million American households have a puppy. Puppies bring joy; unconditional love and teach responsibility. Yet, getting a puppy is a big decision. Please consider the following points as you make this big decision for your family.

Cost

Of course dogs cost money and it is easy to underestimate the cost. The first year can be expensive as you start out. According to the American Kennel Club the annual cost of a dog averages $2,500 for food, vet, pet grooming and pet sitting fees. Consider an emergency healthcare fund for your pet to help future emergency costs.

Time

Time to train, walk, and basic monitoring are important in their early years. Puppies get into trouble so you will need to watch them and prevent serious harm. Walking twice daily for bathroom breaks and exercise; mental and physical stimulation and well let’s face it – the daily cuddle and bonding time. Training takes time as well. Consider enrolling in a local class to each basic dog commands like “sit” or “stay.” The more time you can spend in those first years will create a life long bond.

Size, Weight and Breed

Look carefully at the potential size and weight of your potential full grown puppy. Do you live in a small apartment? Have a back yard? How big is your child? Can they handle a large dog or do they need a smaller breed? Research the breed so you understand temperament and potential long term health problems. The American Kennel Club is again an excellent resource in understanding breeds.

Puppy Proofing

Puppies are curious and will chew, smell and lick everything. Many accidental poisonings occur over the holidays. Take some time to ensure you have a safe environment and have a family meeting to discuss do’s and don’ts to keep your new family member safe.

Long Term Commitment

Owning a puppy is a commitment of years. Possibly eight to sixteen years of commitment. Remember that once the novelty wears off, your newest family member will still need love, care and attention.

We would love to work with you to grow your family!
