Preparing for Summer

Summer is one of the busiest and most critical times of year for animal shelters. As temperatures rise, so does the number of stray, abandoned, and surrendered animals—especially young litters of kittens and puppies born during “kitten season.” Shelters often operate at or beyond capacity, working tirelessly to provide food, medical care, and safe, climate-controlled spaces to protect animals from extreme heat.

Staff and volunteers play an essential role in keeping shelters running smoothly. Daily tasks include cleaning kennels, ensuring animals stay hydrated, walking dogs, and providing enrichment to reduce stress. Without enough hands, it becomes difficult to meet the growing demand, making community involvement more important than ever.

Summer also brings opportunities to connect with the public. Adoption events, outdoor fundraisers, and educational programs help raise awareness and find loving homes for animals in need. Families often have more free time during these months, making it an ideal season to adopt or foster a pet. Even short-term fostering can relieve overcrowding and give animals a break from the shelter environment.

However, the heat presents serious risks. Shelters must be vigilant about preventing heatstroke and ensuring proper ventilation and cooling systems are in place. Donations of supplies like fans, cooling mats, and fresh water are always appreciated.

Supporting Portage APL during the summer can take many forms—adopting, fostering, volunteering, or donating. Every effort, big or small, helps improve the lives of animals waiting for a second chance.
