Dear Portage APL Supporters,
Portage APL is currently closed to the public and volunteers, due the the safety order from the Governor. Our top priority in an emergency is to care for animals. Slowing the amount of traffic in and out of our shelter keeps our staff safe and in turn, allows us to keep fulfilling our mission. We will still be saving animals that are sick, injured, abandoned or abused. We will still care for the animals that are in our shelter, listen to phone messages and check email. Our important work doesn’t stop, we just have to reduce the risk.
A huge heartfelt thanks to all those who came in to adopt and foster our animals so that they did not have to stay in the shelter during this time. It was an effort like I have never seen before. In the end, we were left with only a couple dogs. All the cats were adopted or placed in foster care. Since then, some remaining dogs have been placed in foster care and others are being cared for by staff.
We ask that while you are sheltering at home, you remember us. Kitten season is coming and when it does, we will need help. Regardless of what is happening in the outside world, animals in need will be a priority. Please remember that we are still here, working for animals in our community. If you can donate, foster, or otherwise, we will need all the help you’ve got to get us through this.
Paws to Celebrate has been rescheduled for June 6th, but it is unlikely that we will be able to gather in that way. We are exploring an online auction so that people can still participate and we can still raise much-needed funds. This is going to be hard. This is also temporary. If this crisis has shown us anything, it’s that we have amazing supporters who will get us through anything!!!! I will try to keep posting updates as they are needed.
My deepest thanks,
Chalan Lowry, Executive Director
